1.
Belladonna 01:18
2.
Bilberry 02:28
As quickly as they could they scrambled off the beaten way and up into the deep heather and bilberry brushwood on the slopes above, until they came to a small patch of thick-growing hazels. (LOTR 1: XII)
3.
Birch 02:29
The next day at the hour of sunset Aragorn walked alone in the woods, and his heart was high within him; and he sang, for he was full of hope and the world was fair. And suddenly even as he sang he saw a maiden walking on a greensward among the white stems of the birches; and he halted amazed, thinking that he had strayed into a dream. (LOTR Appendix A : I (v))
4.
Blackberry 01:40
They will be harvesting and blackberrying, before we even begin to go down the other side at this rate. (Hobbit IV)
5.
Boxwood 01:12
6.
Bracken 03:25
She [Niënor] stood still a moment as in wonder, and then, in a swoon of utter weariness, she fell as one stricken down into a deep brake of fern. And there amid the old bracken and the swift fronds of spring she lay and slept, heedless of all. (CoH XV) They were pushing through a sea of bracken with tall fronds rising right above the hobbit’s head (Hobbit VI)
7.
Bramble 04:17
The Wizard’s vale “had become a wilderness of weeds and thorns. Brambles trailed upon the ground, or clambering over bush and bank, made shaggy caves where small beasts housed”. (LOTR 3: VIII) In habitats long impacted by environmentally destructive activities of Sauron they encountered “thickets and wastes of brambles”. (LOTR 4: VII) When Frodo and Sam scrambled on the eastern slopes of the Ephel Duath they found themselves in a polluted and dying land. But it was not yet dead. In the valleys there were areas in which “low scrubby trees lurked and clung, coarse grey grass-tussocks fought with the stones, and withered mosses crawled on them; and everywhere great writhing, tangled brambles sprawled” and the two remaining members of the quest certainly experienced their “hooked barbs that rent like knives” (LOTR 6: II)
8.
Broom 01:38
9.
Butterbur 02:28
“The men of Bree seemed all to have rather botanical (and to the Shire-folk rather odd) names, like Rushlight, Goatleaf, Heathertoes, Appledore, Thistlewool and Ferny (not to mention Butterbur). Some of the hobbits had similar names. The Mugworts, for instance, seemed numerous.” (LoTR 1: IX)
10.
Buttercup 02:00
Old Tom in summertime walked about the meadows gathering the buttercups, running after shadows. (TATB 1)
11.
Cabbage 01:43
12.
Camellia 01:58
13.
Campion 02:41
Then Tuor went up the wide stairs, now half-hidden in thrift and campion, and he passed under the mighty lintel and entered the shadows of the house of Turgon; and he came at last to a high-pillared hall. (UT 1: I)

Cardamom 01:39

about

(SOLD OUT) Cassettes to be released by voicesoftheainur.bandcamp.com

Inspired by the book “Flora of Middle-Earth”
by Walter S. Judd & Graham A. Judd.

The experience of reading Tolkien goes far beyond reading words on a page. While we wander deeper in the books, we actually find ourselves immersed in Middle-Earth, imbued with its people, languages and myth-drenched cities and forests. These tales of epic wars, tragic romances and undying people drive the narrative forward, but it’s the thorough world building that transports us into these mysterious realms of magic. Among them : Woodland realms, pastoral towns and primordial forests in which trees can speak while others house millenia-old beings.

The professor’s process of magnifying, naming and animating all plants pushes us to notice the plants that surround us in a concrete way. Tolkienian mythopoeia does not promote escapism - it reconnects us to important elements of our internal, natural and cultural landscapes. It impacts how we interact with others and with our surroundings - with what we see, what we smell and what we hear.

Are you really listening to what surrounds you?
