1.
Cedar 01:52
Sam gathered a pile of the driest fern, and then scrambled up the bank collecting a bundle of twigs and broken wood; the fallen branch of a cedar at the top gave him a good supply (LoTR 4: IV)
2.
Celandine 02:06
3.
Celeborn 01:22
4.
Cherry 01:57
But the Entwives gave their minds to the lesser trees… and they saw the sloe in the thicket, and the wild apple and the cherry blossoming in spring, and the green herbs in the waterlines in summer, and the seeding grasses in the autumn fields. (LoTR 3: IV)
5.
Clematis 02:59
6.
Clover 03:24
It was the middle of the afternoon before they noticed that great patches of flowers had begun to spring up, all the same kinds growing together as if they had been planted. Especially there was clover, waving patches of cockscomb clover, and purple clover, and wide stretches of short white sweet honey-smelling clover. There was a buzzing and a whirring and a droning in the air. Bees were busy everywhere. (The Hobbit : VII)
7.
Coffee 00:55
Some called for ale, and some for porter, and one for coffee, and all of them for cakes; so the hobbit [Bilbo] was kept very busy for a while. (Hobbit I)
8.
Cordgrass 02:09
The salt marshes where snipe and seamer and the sea-breezes first pipe and play they press together sweeping soundless to the seats of Ylmir [Ulmo], where the waters of Sirion and the waves of the sea murmurous mingle. (Lays I: lines 1550-1555)
9.
Cornel 02:24
10.
Cotton 01:46
11.
Cress 01:08
The falling stream vanished into a deep growth of cresses and water-plants, and they could hear it tinkling away in green tunnels, down long gentle slopes towards the fens of Entwash Vale far away. (LOTR 3: II)
12.
Cucumber 01:34
13.
Culumalda 01:57
The Field of Cormallen, where the host was now encamped, was near to Henneth Annûn, and the stream that flowed from its fall could be heard in the night as it rushed down through its rocky gate, and passed through the flowery meads into the tides of Anduin by the Isle of Cair Andros. (LOTR 6: IV)
14.
The only green was the scum of livid weed on the dark greasy surfaces of the sullen waters (LOTR 4: II) Sauron’s activities certainly follow those of Morgoth, and in the Spring of Arda the Valar knew that he was again at work in the world when “green things fell sick and rotted, and rivers were chocked with weeds and slime (SILM 1).

about

(SOLD OUT) Cassettes to be released by voicesoftheainur.bandcamp.com

Inspired by the book “Flora of Middle-Earth”
by Walter S. Judd & Graham A. Judd.

Tolkien’s meticulous descriptions of Arda’s plants play a major role in the creation of an organic and vivid stage on which the tales we love can grow. In his writings, the professor provides us with various landscapes all rich with life. Mind-wandering in Middle-Earth is not a hard thing to do. You can get lost in deep caves, swim in picturesque rivers, but it is without doubt in the forests that we can find where Tolkien’s heart lies.

Most of all, it’s in woodland realms that the professor’s writings transport us into rêveries - it’s in these strange, old and thick green places that Luthien dances before Beren, that Lady Galadriel stops the seasons. Forests are territories where Hobbits grow taller, where magicians are met and where strange and ancient creatures dwell.

The significance of plants - of fields and forests can be seen in the numerous connections they share with key characters of Tolkien’s legendarium. This third part of a greener than green collection of music pays tribute to the world surrounding the people of Middle-Earth and beyond.
